Ideas for fab Summer days out!

Well, we’re in the middle of week 1 of the London 2012 Olympics and there are still lots of options to enjoy the atmosphere, and watch sports for free – details below.   Looking ahead, I have some diary dates for you in September.  Heritage Open Weekend takes place all over the country 6th – 9th Sept, so if you will be away from your normal home base in England check out their website for what on.  Also Open House London will take place 22nd and 23rd September – there are some superb locations that will be open to the public, all for free – details below.

Over 100 free, and nearly free events to enjoy in August
There are still over 100 free – and nearly free - events still to enjoy this Summer in London and Surrey.   So, there should be something for everyone, every day! Use the Fab Family Days search facility to find events for your preferred day and age group: under 6, 7 – 11, and teenagers.

London 2012 Olympics - free to view options
  1. Race Walk – men’s and women’s 20k race, and a men’s 50k!! race taking place on the streets of London, finishing on the mall – 4th and 11th August.
  2. Triathlon – swimming, cycling and running in and around Hyde Park – 4th and 7th August.
  3. Marathon – sadly without Paula Radcliffe, but still will be a great event taking place 5th and 12th August on the streets of London
  4. Swimming marathon – a 10k swim taking place in the Serpentine in Hyde Park, where swimmers complete 6 laps of the lake 9th and 10th August. The South side of the lake will be open to spectators without tickets.
  5. And finally if you would like to catch up on the games actions on the big screen they are placed in Hyde Park, Victoria Park and Trafalgar Square. 27 Jul-9 Sep
Save the Date: Open House London - 22nd & 23rd Sept

It will be a unique opportunity to see, explore and learn about London’s amazing architecture and design. More than 700 buildings of all kinds will open their doors, alongside a programme of neighbourhood walks, engineering and landscape tours, night-time openings, and experts’ talks – all for free. Highlights include:
Landmarks and towers including 30 St Mary Axe (aka the Gherkin)
- London’s infrastructure revealed with the Institution of Civil Engineers,
including boat tours to the Thames Barrier and beyond,
- A look at what the Olympic legacy will mean beyond the boundaries of the
- Open Embassies with the British Council’s International Architecture and
Design Showcase, part of the Cultural Olympiad
